Fast
trash facts
Litter is:
Litter is dangerous
Broken glass cuts people, plastic chokes and kills
animals, chemicals pollute streams.
Litter is unsightly
Trash and litter ruin property values and lower the
quality of life for everyone.
Litter is contagious
Illegal dumps invite more dumping, turning country
roads into garbage piles, and spoiling parks and recreation
areas.
Litter is expensive
Pennsylvania taxpayers paid $6 million for roadside
cleanups last year. Cleaning up litter is about 9 times more
expensive than collecting it from trash receptacles.
Litter is EVERYONE'S problem
How long will litter last?
The chart below shows how long various items will last in
comparison to the lifespan of the average American.
• A banana or orange peel will last up to 2 years.

5 years.

• Plastic bags will last from 10 to 20 years.
• A tin can will last for 50 years.
• A plastic 6-pack holder will last for 500 years.
• Glass bottles last 1,000 years.
• It is not known how long plastic bottles and styrofoam
will last. In comparison, the average American currently has
a lifespan of 77.2 years.
